Welsh Highland to Rhyd Ddu

18th August 2003 was the day we had all waited for. The opening of the Welsh Highland Railway to Rhyd Ddu. With all due respect, neither the Caernarfon to Dinas, nor the Dinas to Waunfawr sections are particularly scenic. But Waunfawr to Rhyd Ddu is truly magnificent. I travelled on opening day, the 18th, on the third train from Waunfawr to Rhyd Ddu and back. The sun shone brightly, the trains were full, and the views awe inspiring.

In early September, I was on the Welsh Highland again. This time it was a mixture of Photography, and journeys behind each of the locomotives in service, the Garratts nos 138 and 143, and Caernarfon Castle, the Funkey diesel. This time the weather was mixed. Saturday the 6th started cloudy, but sunny in the afternoon, thereafter it remained mainly cloudy with spells of rain until mid week.
